With Christmas and New Year festivities just around the corner, the public’s attention is naturally turning towards how they can mark the occasion in the current climate.
Sadly, this means there is a greater risk of more people releasing sky lanterns this year, posing an even greater threat to wildlife, the countryside and buildings than previous years which could place unnecessary strain on our emergency services at an already difficult period.
Currently there is no national legislation which specifically regulates sky lanterns in the UK, however local councils have powers to ban the release of sky lanterns on council-owned land. As such, with support from other organisations, the NFU has focused their lobbying efforts at local councils, encouraging them to implement a ban on council owned land with the use of the NFU's write to your council E-action, where you will also find more information about why sky lanterns are such a threat.
You can email your council using the NFU's template HERE
